BIG BAMBOO SPIDER

Inspired by the Golden Silk Orbweaver (Nephila clavipes), this 16 foot tall x 36' wide monstrous arachnid features bamboo from South America and Indonesia, reclaimed local wood and manila rope. The sculpture will guard the front entrance to the Natural History Museum of LA County from Jan 8 - 15, 2010.

Design: Gerard Minakawa

Materials: Guadua, Petung, reclaimed wood, recycled natural rope, steel, fiberglass

Volunteers from the Museum's staff wove the spherical exoskeleton from bamboo splits and lashed them all together.

Visitors to the museum can walk around and under the gigantic arachnid.

Remnant pieces of manila rope were used for the leg lashings and stained ebony.

The Spider's heart is a woven bamboo sphere skinned in fiberglass and filled with slow color-changing LED bulbs.

The color gradients- ebony to red to gold- mimic the colors of the Golden Silk Orbweaver (Nephila clavipes). In addition, the rope lashings at each joint represent the tiny black hairs on the actual spider.
